With a mild year-round temperature, gorgeous beaches, budget-friendly prices, hospitable people, and delicious food, Thailand is a treat for any traveler.

Tourism is a crucial part of Thailand's economy, and while there are throngs of visitors, you can still find the solitude to enjoy a stretch of white sandy beaches or to enjoy a plate of authentic som tam. The tourist bureau's motto is, "Amazing Thailand, Amazing Value." How right they are.

There is a lot to see, do, and eat in Thailand, and the diversity of the attractions will astonish any first-time visitor. From diving through incredible underwater vistas and walking along the sandy beaches to visiting Buddhist temples and World Heritage sites, your Thai vacation will be filled with unforgettable sights, sounds, and smells. An experience not to be missed: visit the wonderful floating market at Damnoen Saduak. You will find vendors selling fruits, vegetables, and much more from sturdy canoes. The spectacle itself is visually stunning, and there is nothing like haggling to liven up your vacation!

Many of Thailand's most treasured attractions are outdoors - the beaches, walks to Buddhist temples, markets - and the weather will play a role in your vacation as well. Thailand has a tropical savannah climate, which means it is typically very warm all year. There is a pronounced dry season. The southern and eastern portions of the country have a tropical monsoon climate.

The rainy season in the west occurs from May to October, and in the southeast, it is from October to January. While Thailand is well worth visiting then, you may want to plan for a drier season if you want to take advantage of the beaches. March through May is the hot dry season, and this is when Thailand comes alive with festivals and celebrations, including the Songkran Festival, which honors the Thai New Year.

In addition to weather, foreign travelers should also check for travel advisories before making final plans. While Thailand is very safe and stable, there has been sporadic political unrest. American visitors are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (SMART), which allows them to be updated with important safety and security announcements. Also check the US State Department's page on Thailand.

Thailand is one of the most exotic locales in the world, and the value you will find there is incredible. The park comprises of fifty-one mostly uninhabited islands all of which are located within the Andaman Sea near the Malaysian island of Langkawi. Three of the islands are easily reached from the coastal port of Ban Pak Bara on the mainland. They are Ko Adang, Ko Lipe and Ko Tarutao with the latter being the park's head quarters.

All these islands are only accessible to visitors from mid November to mid May. During the rest of the year most amenities are officially closed to all tourists as monsoon storms can make it extremely risky for the ferries to make the crossing.

The best time to visit the park is over the Thai, Chinese and Western New Years. If you be wanting to stay over during this period, you might have to book your accommodation well in advance as the bungalows here can fill up rather quickly.

For centuries the islands around these parts had a somewhat sinister prominence as a haunt for pirates but they have long since gone. Jack Sparrow would have had a field day here had he discovered this region. It wasn't until the 1940's that the British Royal Navy finally curtailed the pirate raids. The only people to invade the area now are tourists. The whole archipelago extends over 580 square miles (1,490 square kilometres). It became Thailand's first national marine park in 1974.

The park includes some of the most spectacular and unspoiled scenery coupled with an abundant wildlife. The forests and seas support an incredible variety of fauna with langurs, wild pigs and crab eating macaques being a common sight.

Lesser known sighting include several unique subspecies of squirrel, tree shrew and deer. The park is also home to over one hundred species of bird with reef egrets and horn-bills frequently being seen. If you are lucky, you might spot a white-bellied sea eagle, a pied imperial pigeon or a frigate bird.

Twenty five percent of the world's fish species are believed to inhabit the surrounding seas including a rich concentration of some ninety two species of tropical coral fish. Offshore sightings of sperm and minke whales, dugongs and dolphins are not uncommon around here. The island is also home to hawks-bill, leather-back, green and small Olive Ridley turtles, although dwindling in numbers.

Ko Tarutao is the largest island in the group measuring 26 kilometres or 10 miles in length. Much of the island is covered in a semi-green tropical rain forest which rises steeply to a height of some 700 metres (2,300 feet) at which point you will be awarded with some of the most wonderful natural scenic views imaginable.

To get there, take the ferry from the village at Ban Pak Bara on the mainland. The boat will drop you off at Ao Pante Malaka Pier on the northwestern side of Ko Tarutao where the park's headquarters is located. Once there you will find a visitors centre, a library, two restaurants and the only shop on the island selling mostly essentials. From here you can take part in several diverse daily activities.

One very worthwhile excursion is to climb To-Boo Cliff for the spectacular views it offers of the surrounding islands as well as the crocodile's head cape at the north end of the bay. The steep half hour climb is a must especially at sunset.

Another equally enterprising activity would be to take the one and a half hour long-boat trip from Ao Pante pier to the stalagmite filled Crocodile Cave. The trip will take you along an inland canal through a bird filled mangrove swamp.

You may think that going to a cave of crocodiles is somewhat crazy if not a little scary but there really is no need to panic as you are unlikely to see any of these giant snappers here. The only mammal sighting you'll get to see would be that of an odd otter or perhaps even a small soft-shelled Olive Ridley turtle.

If you are looking for a luxury resort or two in which to stay the night, I'm afraid you've come to the wrong place. Most of the accommodation here is at the very bottom end of the market. Lodgings consist mostly of communal bungalows and longhouses. Would you like to know what a longhouse is! It's just that, a long house with lots of beds. If you don't mind sharing and sleeping rough then that's a completely different story. Oh! Did I mention that there's no hot water either.

Never mind, perhaps the only other solution would be to hire a tent and sleep on the beach. After all the nights are still pretty warm here in the tropics. Speaking of beaches there are several pristine soft white sandy beaches dotted along the north west coast of the island, most of which are within easy walking distance.

The beautiful bays of Ao Jak and Ao Molae are a half hour walk from Ao Pante. These two quiet beaches here are fringed with coconut palms and complimented with soft white sand. A great place to spend the day relaxing. Need I say more.

Beyond the next headland is the beautiful beach of Ao Sone which is fringed with casuarina trees but otherwise equally as stunning. The beach is also a favourite site for sea turtles who come here to lay their eggs. The major part of the bay sports a long sweeping shore of flawless soft fine sand and crystal clear waters.

There is a one hour trail leading up to a wonderful waterfall at the north end of the bay and another slightly longer trail to a waterfall in the middle of a mangrove swamp at the far south end of the bay. Ao Sone beach can be reached either by car from the park's visitor centre along one of only two roads on the island or if you prefer, you can walk there though it will take you about two hours to reach.

The only other road takes you through a rubber plantation and evergreen forest to the east side of the island where the rocky bay of Ao Taloh Wow is located.

From Ao Taloh Wow, you can set off along an overgrown trail through the forest to the sandy bay of Ao Taloh Udang located on the southern part of the island. Be prepared for a long haul as this trail will take you a good five hours to reach.

If you do make the trip, you'll get to see the visible remnants of a penal colony set up to house some of Thailand's political prisoners. It would appear that all political prisoners are imprisoned on one or other island around the world at some stage of their lives. Some of you may recall Nelson Mandela being incarcerated on Robben Island in South Africa for many a year. He later went on to become the first black person to take up the presidency of that country.

Apparently the author of the first English-Thai dictionary as well as a grandson of Rama VII along with the plotters of two failed coup attempts, were imprisoned on Ko Tarutao Island in the late 1930's before returning to a high government post. Seems this is the way to go should you wish to be travel in a similar direction.

However ordinary criminals imprisoned at Ao Taloh Udang and Ao Taloh Wow had a much harsher time. During World War II when supplies from the mainland dried up, prisoners and their guards ganged up and together turned to piracy.

This resulted into a rather lucrative business that was only stopped after the war when the Thai government asked the British in Malaysia to send in troops to bring about some sort of order. The main problem today is not so much the pirates and smugglers but the many illicit trawlers fishing in the national marine park waters.

The wild and somewhat rugged Ko Adang is one of only three inhabited islands in the archipelago that offers accommodation albeit on the rudimentary side. Isn't it nice to know that there are some places in Thailand that are not as exploited as many others have over the last couple of decades. Therefore you won't find huge crowds here as in the more commercialized zones. Best to enjoy while you can.

Ko Adang is much more low-key and acts mostly as a spring-board to some great snorkeling opportunities than anything else. Most of the island is thickly carpeted in tropical rain forest with many year round waterfalls. Some form freshwater rock pools such as Rattana Falls on the southwest coast where you can take a cool dip while overlooking the sea. Nearby Laem Sone is where you will find the park station and a steep and narrow beach backed by a thick canopy of pines.

The smaller island of Ko Lipe makes a busy but extremely pleasant contrast to the other islands as it sports a relaxed and lay-back atmosphere with an equally mellow nightlife (not to be confused with the nightlife in other parts of Thailand) Ko Lipe is a small flat triangle of land located two kilometres south of Ko Adang.
The footpaths though coconut plantations allow you to enjoy a leisurely stroll.

More than that, it has one of the most immaculate and prettiest beaches you will ever come across in southern Thailand, for that matter, the country. The beach is called Hat Pattaya, a shining and shimmering crescent of squeaky clean soft white sand coupled with equally exquisite turquoise waters. It's pure pleasure.

Hi my name is Grahame Pike and the author of this article. This capital city offers visitors a true glimpse into life in Thailand and provides them with exotic sights, luxurious hotels, family fun activities, and a one of a kind nightlife experiences that will be remembered for a lifetime. The unforgettable city offers state of the art skyscrapers, modernized stores and malls for shopping, and a touch of mystery around every corner. Bangkok tourists will be completely satisfied that they have experienced Thai culture, cuisine, shopping, nightlife, and then some after spending a few days in this city that never sleeps.

Bangkok Night

Sightseeing is one of the major things to do when visiting Bangkok. The city is full of temples that depict some of the most beautiful Thai architecture in the country. Some of the most popular temples include the Wat Pho and the Wat Phra Kaew. Most first time visitors opt to take advantage of the knowledge and expertise of a tour guide who will spend time showing off the sites of this large city. If your time is limited and needs to be maximized, a tour guide is highly recommended.

Besides visiting the many temples in the city, other prominent tourist attractions that can be seen with the help of a tour guide or self-guided include the Grand Palace, Dusit Hall and Zoo, Temple Mount, and the National Museum which are all located in the area of Banglamphu. Tours to the magnificent Grand Palace portray the official residence of the Thai royalty. The palace was constructed in 1782 and housed many monarchs including King Chulalongkorn. The palace is open for public tours daily. The Grand Palace does enforce a dress code - men should wear long pants and women long skirts and sleeved shirts. You can pickup a rental pair of pants for a small deposit at the ticket window.

For those travelers looking for a cost effective and budget friendly experience, Khao San Road is the place to visit. What was once a quiet residential street has turned into a tourist hub of commercialism that features internet cafes, bars, nightclubs, and plenty of shopping venues. The area is famous in film with the opening scene of the movie the Beach featuring Leonardo DiCaprio taking place along Khao San Road. The area is also popular among the backpacker crowd wanting to partake in the purchase of pirated CDs and DVDs, knock off clothing, luggage, and more.

Contrary to the seedy reputation of Bangkok's nightlife in the past, the city has turned over a new leaf and is evolving into offering some of the best places to frequent after dark in all of Southeast Asia. No matter what your taste in nightlife, Bangkok has something for everyone. From huge nightclubs to small intimate restaurant and bars, there is a place for every taste. Similar to most major cities, taxi cabs and tuk-tuks are available on nearly every corner to provide convenient and very inexpensive transportation to the area's hotspots.

Sukhumvit Road is an upscale area featuring 5 star hotels, fun bars, and many entertainment options. From the Nana Plaza which offers a large complex full of go-go bars, to dining options for those ready for a night on the town. The stores in the area stay open late and shoppers have their free run of retail therapy late into the night. Most of the malls and market areas run extended hours and do most of their business at night. One of the more popular shopping venues is the night market at Patpong in the Silom area. If you can get passed the seedy bars and continue into the market place, visitors can walk away with a much coveted replica watches or handbags.

Most of the nightlife and shopping venues close their doors by 2:00 a.m., rather than going a full 24-hour period. Because of this, the night can be curbed but careful planning will enable a wonderful experience in Bangkok. Many western visitors return year after year because of the many attractions that can be found in this exotic land without disrupting their budget and emptying their wallets.

Alex Smith maintains and manages the Cheap Thailand Travel website at http://www.cheapthaitravel.com

Article Source: Alex_A._Smith

A Brief History of Thai Food

Thai cuisine is unique amongst all the food of Southeast Asia and is by far the most well-known. It is different from neighbouring Chinese and Indian cuisines which influenced it and is very easily identifiable as it incorporates a fantastic blend of all the five taste groups: sweet, sour, bitter, salty and spicy. Thai food is of course best known for being very hot and spicy and many dishes use a lot of fresh chili. Over the years Thailand has used foreign influences and combined them to make a world-famous cuisine that is uniquely Thai.

Thailand, in the days when it was known as Siam, used to be the cross-roads of east-west trading and shipping routes, which means that its culture, religion and cuisine have been influenced with both Persian and Arabian elements. In the more recent past, other foreign recipes have been mixed with traditional Thai dishes and have resulted in a flavour that is unique to this country.

"Tai" people were the original settlers of Thailand and came from the valleys of the mountainous region of Southwest China (now known as Yunnan) sometime between the sixth and thirteenth centuries. They migrated into what we now call northern Thailand, Laos, northern Vietnam and northern Myanmar. Bringing their influence from China they mixed their knowledge with the former people of the southern peninsula and incorporated all the new herbs and spices of that southern region, resulting in many similarities between Thai and Chinese cooking.

In addition to this migration, the foreign trade also bought a lot of influence - most significantly the Portuguese, who brought many sweet flavours and even the red chilli, and the Buddhist monks who brought curry from India. Traces of this Indian influence can still be seen today in dishes such as Massaman curry and yellow curry.

These days Thai cuisine continues to evolve, grow and transform, taking new influences and fusing them with old and Thai food is now enjoyed in restaurants all over the world. As appreciation for this unique cuisine continues to grow, the food is a continual exploration of global cooking techniques, ingredients and styles. This is further fueled by modern overseas trading and immigration, with ingredients so easily available all over the world and the ability of people to work in kitchens anywhere they please, bringing their skills with them across the globe. Finally with the internet and the global spread of information, as well as modern mass-tourism, the influence of foreign foods on Thai cuisine has never been so big.

Marc lives in Brisbane, in South Queensland Australia he owns a Thai Takeaway business in Brisbane. His wife is from Thailand, and being an excellent cook they decided to open this Thai takeaway business in Everton Park which is on the north side of Brisbane. Marc also works on a Thailand flower delivery website business which his wife's family owns in Thailand. They spend most of the year in Brisbane, but are both keen to take frequent trips to Thailand where they enjoy the laid back lifestyle, great food, and they both love being close to nature.

Article Source: Marc_Lanna

History Of Thailand

The earliest identifiably Thai kingdom was founded in Sukhothai in 1238, reaching its zenith under King Ramkhamhaeng in the 14th century before falling under the control of the kingdom of Ayutthaya, which ruled most of present-day Thailand and much of today's Laos and Cambodia as well, eventually also absorbing the northern kingdom of Lanna. Ayutthaya was sacked in 1767 by the Burmese, but King Taksin regrouped and founded a new capital at Thonburi. His successor, General Chakri, moved across the river to Bangkok and became King Rama I, the founding father of the Chakri dynasty that rules (constitutionally) to this day.

Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only South-East Asian country never to have been colonised by a foreign power, and fiercely proud of the fact. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. During World War II, while Japan conquered the rest of Southeast Asia, only Thailand was not conquered by the Japanese due to smart political moves. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. After a string of military dictatorships and quickly toppled civilian Prime Ministers, Thailand finally stabilized into a fair approximation of a democracy and the economy boomed through tourism and industry. Above it all presided King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), the world's longest-reigning monarch and a deeply loved and respected figure of near-mythic proportions.

In September 2006, a swift and bloodless military coup overthrew populist tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra's democratically elected but widely criticized government, exposing a fault line between the urban elite that has ruled Thailand and the rural masses that supported Thaksin. Thaksin went into exile and a series of unstable governments followed, with the successors of Thaksin's Thai Rak Thai party and the royalist-conservative People's Alliance for Democracy duking it out both behind the scenes and, occasionally, out in the streets, culminating in Bangkok's airports being seized and shut down for a week in November 2008. As of 2009, things have quieted down, but the political scene remains in flux and the direction of the country once the ailing King passes away is a question mark.

Read more about Thailand at WikiTravel.org

Short Breaks on Phuket

Phuket is an hour away from Bangkok's international airport and Singapore, so is an ideal place to unwind after a business trip. You can let your hair down in Patong and have a massage almost everywhere on the island. Phuket is a little more sophisticated than Patong, but of course it's busy, and hectic with people who want to shop. It has an island atmosphere, so the pace of life is much more relaxed than in Singapore or Bangkok, making it a good get-away. The beaches are wonderful and there's a huge choice of water sports, or small bays where you can just laze on the beach more or less away from it all, even in high season.

There is a great night life scene and this ranges from having an extended dinner with a choice of cuisines, Thai, Japanese, Indian or Pakistani and Malay. Seafood is a good choice as it is generally very fresh and there are various delicacies to tempt your palate. You can go to a cabaret featuring the Ladyboys and marvel at their beauty and talent, or go clubbing or to a disco, (just remember that the hostesses who sit with you will need to be paid at some time whether in drinks or in cash).

A few days on the island can be just what you need before that long trip home to what may be winter, so make the most of your time and relax on the beach with some of the more succulent fruit the island has to offer, juicy mangoes which you can just roll between your palms, squeeze a little and make a hole in the skin and suck out the nectar; or the more exotic mangosteens and rambutans which you peel like a lychee to get at the white fruit inside. You should also try durian, which you may or may not acquire a taste for. An 'exotic' fruit cocktail is readily available at the myriad café-bars and restaurants, and juices are available on the roads as well as Thai versions of fast-food.

There are many hotels and other accommodation to suit every pocket, and of course you can book online before you leave for the island. You can go to a lively destination or to a quieter spot away from the hordes which tend to congregate at Phuket, Patong, Kata and Karon. One of the places you shouldn't miss is the mystical Phang Nga Bay, which is a sight you will remember for life.
Enjoy your well-deserved break!

Need to know more about Phuket and Patong, please click this Link

Article Source: Walter_Hart

Northern Thailand's Beautiful Terrain and Scenery Is the Perfect Setting for a Family Adventure

Nicely tucked away in Northern Thailand's scenic and lush jungle mountains lie the small quaint town of Pai. Its position along the Pai River makes it an excellent base for outdoor. And why not bring the family along? The slower pace of life, varying landscapes and overall cooler weather than most other places in Thailand makes a Pai adventure a suitable outdoor family experience. In the space of five days, your entire family will be entertained as well as enlightened through a series of soft adventures in the great north.

Set out to Pai from Chiang Mai, by air or land. Either is fine, both are scenic. Just to let you know that the road leading to Pai can be a bit dizzying. That's because the route from Chiang Mai has more twists and turns than your average 135 kilometer route. Because of this, drive time can take several hours. But it is well worth it! Spend the rest of the day exploring this little town or resting up for the exciting journey that awaits.

Kick the adventure tour off with an easy bike ride through the valley. Check out the area's waterfalls, river scenery and hill-tribe villages. It's quite scenic and photo-worthy. Stop as often as you like to snap that perfect shot or interact with the hill-tribes. End the day by watching the sun set over the horizon. And why not make the day better with a deserving evening foot massage?

If you like water rafting, then we got something for you. If you prefer trekking, then our hiking option may be what you are looking for. Rafters will zip down the Pai River along class 3-4 rapids and will spend the night in a bamboo hut in the jungle. Hikers will take a light trek to limestone caves and a rest at a village homestay. Both options not only showcase the area's beauty, but also shed light on the local culture and lifestyle of the people here. Oh, and also some memorable times.

Those who chose the rafting option will continue rafting downstream to the Khong River. The trekkers will hike to the various hill-tribe villages. Both sets of adventurers will end up in Mae Hong Son. And guess what, you are just steps away from the Burmese border. Get acquainted with this small town and continue your adventure by exploring its immediate surroundings on the back of an elephant and by long-tail boat. Head back to town and then back to Chiang Mai for the conclusion of your adventure.

Pai is certainly a picturesque setting for a family adventure holiday. It's still considered off the beaten path, so expect some authentic experiences and a unique way for kids and adults to discover the scenery and people of the north.

Article Source: Collen_Steinbring

<georss:box>18.9374849 98.16793219999994 19.7802929 98.70540119999993</georss:box>

Explore the Mystic Beauty of Chiang Rai

      By Marion Langley
Where would you want to go if you wanted to soak in the timeless and conventional beauty of Thailand? The most comfortable way to travel to the south of Thailand is by plane or overnight train. You can book these options with any travel agency in Bangkok or you can buy the ticket directly at the airport in Bangkok. Generally you will get on a train around 6pm or just shortly after.

You can travel by 2nd class, sleeper or 1st class. The difference is that with a 2nd class carriage there are beds on either side, which are upper and lower bunks. Lower are more expensive than the upper. 1st class carriage is great for couples or anyone that wants some privacy. These are a self contained booth designed to hold 2 people. You can expect to travel by train for 12 hours.

Reaching Surat Thani province around 5.30 - 6am the next day. When you arrive at the station you will need to buy a bus/boat combined ticket there to Samui. To book the ticket in advance is not possible but there are many service-booths and you can easily arrange any connection you like. A ticket for the train costs around 1000 Thai Baht depending on the transfers you choose. You will then reach Don Sak Pier which is the pier where the ferries leave for Kho Samui island. Travel time to the pier is approx one and a half hours. Travel time aboard the ferry is also one and a half hours. You will come ashore in Nathon, where the main ferry terminal of the island is located. Nathon is half way round the island from the most popular beach Chaweng.

The rising cost in petrol and the higher cost of petrol on the island (additional transport charges) means that taxi's are not as economical as Bangkok. However you will need to get one if you plan to stay on this side of the Island. If you would like to book one of the Samui hotels you can do this by visiting any online hotel reservation web site there are many available offers. Another and quicker way to reach Samui, is to travel via Lomprayah. Lomprayah is reached by air or bus to Chumphon. The trip takes approximately 6 hours. There you catch the high speed Catamaran and head of to the first stop Koh Nang Yuan. Then to Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and finally onto Koh Samui. A great trip when you are a fan of Islands. Again this takes around 6 hours. Tickets again are around 1000 Thai Baht each way.

You can however catch a bus if you wish which will only cost around 800 Baht but do you really want to sit on a coach for 12 or 13 hours, then transfer to minivan to the pier and then get a ferry?. Note: I advise you to NOT choose this transportation during the wet season as the sea can be rough and many people fall sea sick on the Catamaran. Of course you can fly to Samui with tickets here around 4500 baht and rising!! There are around 15 - 20 flights daily so again connections aren't a problem at all.

About the Author: Billy Horner, is a professional writer for the travel industry. While most dishes you may be readily familiar with-such as pad thai-are eaten throughout the country, central Thailand, the South, the Northeast and the North all have their unique repertoires. So you have reached the north. You're sitting in a Thai restaurant in Chiang Mai, Thailand, but not quite sure where to start. Is this dish too spicy? Does it contain anything you're allergic to: nuts, dairy products, egg, soya, or seafood? Print out this little guide to begin your culinary adventure in the north. Typical ingredients used in these dishes will be listed in detail, as well, to guard against specific food allergies and keep your holiday from being spoiled.

Aeb muu

This dish can serve as both appetizer (albeit a heavy one) and part of the main course, usually eaten with sticky rice. The aeb muu is a paste comprised of pork and chili paste mixed together before being wrapped in banana leaves, and it is then cooked by roasting over a low fire or steaming. It tastes predominantly of chili and herbs, and tends toward spicy. Ingredients include the following: minced pork, diced kaffir lime leaves, coriander, spring onion, and chicken egg. The curry paste that serves as the main condiment consists of dried bird chili, salt, turmeric, galangal, lemongrass, garlic, and shallots. As you can see from the list, this makes for a very tasty dish rich with the scents, textures and unique flavors of no fewer than nine distinct kinds of spices and herbs. If you aren't partial to sticky rice, this is also good to eat with plain steamed jasmine rice.

Khao soy

This is a noodle dish marked by its distinct colors: bright yellow egg noodle and rich red-orange curry. It is definitely a main dish and can be very filling, with varying degrees of hotness, and eaten along with a number of side condiments sprinkled onto the noodle to add to the already strong flavors: pickled mustard greens, lime, spring onion, coriander and shallots. The curry itself is a thick soup that's made from curry paste (usually of similar or identical make to curry paste used in aeb muu) and a good helping of vegetable oil and coconut milk. As this originated as a Muslim dish-though it has since been absorbed into northern Thai cuisine thanks to a history of cultural integration and exchange of ideas-most khao soy is made with chicken or beef rather than pork, though the pork variation is also widely available.

Larb pla

The "larb" refers to a particular way of mixing boiled minced meat with chili paste, various spices and herbs. The larb pla is a fish variant, made from boiled fish grounded to a fine paste, shrimp paste, roasted rice grains, turmeric, lemongrass, coriander, spring onion, Vietnamese mint, garlic and vegetable oil. It's best eaten with crisp, fresh vegetables.

Kaep muu

Essentially pork shavings: this is a northern Thai snack with distinct flavoring, made from pork skin marinated in dark soy sauce then deep-fried until it is crispy and brown. No spices or herbs are involved, though it's a little heavy on the fat side: travelers cautious of the effect of hot food on their palates can sample this one without worry.

Yam sanat

A Lanna-Thai salad comprised of coarsely chopped vegetables stirred in curry paste: this is a perfect dish for those watching for calories or even vegetarians (as long as you request the restaurant to leave the minced pork out). The ingredients are long beans, water morning glory, eggplant, shallots, coriander, spring onion, garlic, and a type of acacia leaves.

Nam prik ong

Minced pork, chili paste, and cherry tomatoes are the main ingredients that make up this dish: the name suggests that it's one of the spicier dishes but is in fact the least hot of all "nam prik" dishes. Eaten with fresh eggplants, lettuces, pumpkin, long beans and cucumber.

Visiting Chiang Mai, Thailand? Neighboring provinces are Tak, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom and Ratchaburi. Kanchanaburi city, the capital of Kanchanaburi Province, is a popular resort town and has become a major tourist destination with attractions which offer an intriguing experience for both first-time and repeat visitors by its long history and ancient civilizations, a location of the Bridge over the River Kwai as it is known internationally and scene of the historic World War II. The province is also famous for its natural attractions such as forests, mountains, caves and waterfalls. The district covers the source valleys of the rivers River Kwai Yai and River Kwai Noi ("River Kwai"), which merge at the city Kanchanaburi and form the Mae Klong River there. As a result of these major rivers and three of Thailand's largest reservoirs, Kanchanaburi features several of Thailand's largest waterfalls as well as a number of wildlife sanctuaries. Several National Parks are located in the forests of the mountain area of the province - the Erawan, Sai Yok, Khao Laem, Khaoen Sri Nakarin and Chaloem Rattanakosin National Parks are located in the province. The Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in this province is also listed in the UNESCO world heritage list.

The province is most famous for the Bridge over the River Kwai, which was built next to the town of Kanchanaburi crossing the Mae Klong river. This bridge was first built as a part of the railway between Thailand and Burma in 1942.The Death Railway ran all the way from the River Kwai valley up to the Three Pagodas Pass, a break in the Thanon Thongchai Mountain Range that divides Thailand and Myanmar.

Nearby the reconstructed bridge are monuments including an Allied War Cemetery and a war museum. The River Kwai is a river in western of Thailand. It flows for about 380 kilometres through Sangkhla Buri, Si Sawat, and Mueang Districts of Kanchanaburi Province.

River Kwai Bridge Week held every year around the end of November until the beginning of December to commemorate the significance of the Death Railway and the Bridge over the River Kwai taking place in World War II. Visitors can see the historical and archaeological exhibition, folk performances, booths of products, entertaining activities, and light and sound show.

In economic terms, Kanchanaburi has been prospering for a number of years. Important industries include sugar, agricultural products, and jewelry. Tourism is also a main source of income for the locals, though most are engaged in agricultural activities. The province's population is made up of Thai, Mon, and Karen peoples, most of whom are rural dwellers who enjoy living simply and respecting nature. Moreover, folk music and dances dating back at least 500 years are still performed to this day.

Only two hours from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is accessible by road or rail, the latter of which includes sightseeing day trips that run on weekends and public holidays; these weekend special trains are reasonably priced and make hassle free and enjoyable adventures. Even the climate of Kanchanaburi, cooled by the altitude, forests, and rivers, is a welcome respite from the heat and congestion of the nearby capital city.

The town itself is a place to relax, watching the water from the banks of the river, inside a raft house, or from a riverside restaurant. Many visitors like to rest along the river with a cold drink and a good book. Many of them come here just for a couple days but stay for weeks in order to explore all of the attractions in the surrounding countryside. Along with visiting spectacular waterfalls, lush forests, and three of Thailand's largest reservoirs, white water rafting, elephant trekking, and golfing are popular activities for visitors. Reminiscent of the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Ayutthaya provides tourists with a different perspective of Thailand and is guaranteed to be a memorable day trip away from the hustle and bustle of lively Bangkok.

Only a mere 45 minutes away from Bangkok, Ayutthaya is easily accessible via bus, train, or mini van. The best option of these is the mini van as it offers a ride that is faster and more comfortable than the two other options. Mini vans to Ayutthaya are available at the Victory Monument BTS station. Upon arriving in Ayutthaya, tuk-tuks are available to take you around. Tuk-tuks can be hired at a rate of 200 THB per person for the whole day.

Assuming that one only has around 5 hours in the Old Capital, these are the must-sees and dos in Ayutthaya:

1) Wat Phanan Choeng
This giant golden Buddha, measuring 90 meters in height and 20.17 in width, was built even before the Ayutthaya kingdom was established. It was initially built in the middle of a large open space where the magnificent golden statue could be seen from all directions in Ayutthaya. Today, a building has been constructed to protect the Buddha from natural elements.

2) The Royal Elephant Kraal
The elephant is the national symbol of Thailand and is used in many of their royal processions and celebrations. Get the chance to ride an elephant around several of the temples in Ayutthaya. A rate of 200 THB per person for 10 minutes is charged.

3) Lunch by the river
There are several restaurants along the river. After spending the morning exploring the various temples of Ayutthaya, reward yourself with a Thai beer and a sumptuous lunch at one of these restaurants.

4) Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon
Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is one of Ayutthaya's more beautiful wats. Set in a fairly large complex, a large reclining Buddha is also one of the attractions in the area. The wat's giant chedi, which is the highlight of the complex, is said to be the highest point in Ayutthaya.

5) Wat Mahathat
This wat is famous for the Buddha head that could be found among the roots of one of the trees in the complex. Though there is not much to be seen in the complex besides this, this wat is still worth the trip for day visitors in Ayutthaya.

There are lots of other attractions in Ayutthaya that would suit your preferences. Whichever activity you choose, Ayutthaya is guaranteed to be a memorable experience.

Nina Marquez is passionate about traveling and dreams of being a nomad for a year. Your hotel can arrange for them, it supports the local economy and are still affordable.

Map out which temples you want to see on what days. You can use this pre-planning to help save money on packing lunches or stop in at a local coffee or sandwich shop to get even more emerged into the local color.

Hire transportation. This adds to your security and is not cost prohibitive. Sometimes your guide will provide transportation in their fees.

Remember you sun block, camera, water and snacks

Extra Bhat for entry offering for each temple. Prices will be listed in your temple guide book you pick up at the hotels

1. Everyone's first pick has got to be Wat Phra Kaew- the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Emerald Buddha was created in India in 43 BC. It is made of green jasper rather than emerald and clothed in golden robes; it stands about 45 cm tall. But as impressive as this Buddha is... that is not why the Wat Phra Kaew Temple is so Spiritually and culturally important. Wat Phra Kaew is of primary significance because the Temple's connect to the King- Thailand's Spiritual Leader! The Temple is built on the grounds of the grand palace and hosts many other religious artifacts and ancient manuscripts with in their two libraries.

2. It may not be "everyone's second pick, but the Wat Traimit-or Temple of the Golden Buddha, has my vote for second position. Why? Because it houses the Largest Solid Gold Buddha in the World! It stands about 15 feet tall and weight over 11 tons! In ancient times it was covered in plaster to hide its value from marauding armies. Then in 1955 while being moved a monk noticed a crack in the exterior and a yellow sparkle inside. This gives a Buddhist meaning to the American colloquialism; "Don't judge a book by its cover."

3. Third is the iconic Wat Arun- the Temple of Dawn. Built on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. It predates Bangkok as the set of government and it's massive 260 foot high Buddha can easily be seen from all over the neighboring areas. It is a majestic sight to see...especially at sun set or rise!

4. Wat Pho - the Temple of the Reclining Buddha is my number 4 pick. Why? Because being the birth place of Traditional Thai massage... for a few Bhat one can be smoothed into peaceful tranquility during you long days of touring. This busy Temple is adjacent to grand palace and it is common to see a Thai dance performance or be engaged by a monk wishing to practice his English. This Temples "One - Two" punch has got to be: A. It's 150 foot long Reclining Buddha monolith. B. It's large 1,000 Buddha Statues placed all around the grounds. (Here a Buddha, there a Buddha, everywhere a Buddha!)

5. Wat Mahathat is my 5th choice. The Temple of the Great Relic is the headquarters of Thailand's largest monastic order and *Vipassana Meditation centre. [ Vipassana- which means to see things as they really are. And is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation being practiced in Thailand. ] The temple was originally built to house a relic of the Buddha and is one of the oldest temples in Bangkok. Interestingly enough you can also have your fortune told inside the 'wat' (temple) by a seasoned monk. [If you have seen the movie: "Eat, Pray, Love," you'll have an idea of the gentle spirited monk that will be sitting across from you.]

6. Once the highest mount in Bangkok, Wat Saketor- the Temple of the Golden Mount was built by King Rama III in 1800's. The original temple collapsed and was rebuilt to house a relic of Lord Buddha. It's 300 steps to the top will not make you short of breath but it's towering 260 foot tall gold chedi just might leave you speechless.

7. The Temple of the Fifth King- King Rama V is named: Wat Benchamabophit is also known by foreigners as the Marble Temple. Constructed from pristine white Carrara marble form Italy... this temple is the hidden gem on our list. It is not to be missed if you are touring in Bangkok for two days or longer! One should walk around the whole Temple and building structures to admiring the intricate and colorful decoration of the windows and especially the gables. Wat Benchamabophitis a royal monastery belonging to the first class ranking of Rajavaravihara. It is located close to Dusit palace in the city district of Bangkok called Dusit.

8. Though not much of a tourist draw, the Wat Suthat- is the temple that keep on giving with it interesting history, multi-cultural art and architecture. It comes in at number 8 on our list for its inauspicious size and most auspicious history. The Temple took the reign of three kings before it was completed. It houses the 25 foot tall Buddha statue Phra Sri Sakyamuni or "Sisakayamunee". This Temple also doubles as a monk's home and is decorated with over 150 additional golden Buddha sculptures and numerous Buddhist art murals.

9. Though near the bottom of our list the Wat Ratchabophit may not be the last Temple to visit in chronological order as it is located within walking distance from Wat Suthat and the Giant Swing. After coming to the throne, this pagoda was the first Temple commissioned to be built by King Rama V in 1869.

The entire compound of the Wat holds a cluster of buildings, all built on elevated bases, sheathed with marble. With its exquisite architecture, a beauty of the exteriors; adorned with hand-painted glazed tiles, and studded door and window frames of the buildings, the Wat Ratchabophit, though small in size, claims distinction as one of the most beautiful temples of Thailand.

10. This ancient Temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period; is also adjacent to the Grand place and is called Wat Rakhang. The Temples name means "bell". During the rign of King Rama II a large bell was unearthed on the premises and was later moved to Wat Phra Kaewin exchange for five smaller bells. The halls and grounds are lovely here. And if your into seeing the homesteads of famous people, here you would find the Thai version in its' "ho trai." The house where king Rama I lived before he was crowned.

See our video of these temples on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.co/user/BuddhaSculpture?feature=mhum

David Black Jr is a world traveling enthusiast who walks a Spiritual path. He is also an expert in property investments in ...

Choosing Koh Samui as your tropical, sun kissed, holiday destination is an easy choice to make. Deciding what kind of accommodation to book for the duration of your stay is a somewhat less easy decision.

With so many people erring away from using the services of a travel agent and leaning towards booking accommodation themselves, often online, the doors are opening to a wider range of options and more attractive holiday accommodation rates.

One way of making great savings on your holiday accommodation, especially if you are travelling with a group, family or friends is to book your own private villa.

Hiring a private villa in Koh Samui has considerable advantages over hotel accommodation. Villa facilities, that are often on a par with five star hotel accommodation, are there for your private use and do not have to be shared with other hotel guests.

There are several factors to take into consideration when choosing the right villa for your requirements, price being the obvious factor. Koh Samui has a wide range of villa rental options that will fit into your price range.

One of the imposing opulent hilltop and beach front villas, with the option of live- in staff, housekeepers and chefs is the perfect choice for large groups, special occasion vacations and weddings. Smaller villas set in tropical gardens, away from ocean views, can make a more affordable choice, where in- house services, such as masseuses and chefs can be brought in for a special treat or special occasion.

Location is another factor you will want to consider in the choice of a holiday rental villa. Your ideal holiday might include being close to the Koh Samui nightlife and shopping facilities or restaurants that are in easy reach of your villa. Or, perhaps, you might prefer a more relaxing style holiday in one of the more remote areas of the island. Koh Samui has an enormous range of activities to enjoy; if you are travelling with children. Being close to these activities will be an advantage. Golf enthusiasts can take advantage of a villa in close proximity to the Samui Golf Courses and if it is the ocean you love, one of Samui's beach front villas will be the perfect choice for you.

Villas offer considerably more privacy than hotel accommodation and make an idea choice for honeymooners or couples who simply want to get away from it all. Having the option of a chauffer, or hiring a car, will enable you to enjoy a secluded location whilst still being able to reach other more lively parts of the island.

What ever your private rental villa requirements, a Koh Samui villa has something that will fit your needs and transform your holiday in Koh Samui into a luxurious trip of a lifetime.

Jonathon A Smith is the lead content writer for Phuket Property Store and Ko Samui Property.
He has written extensively on the subjects of Koh Samui Real Estate and Phuket Real Estate.

<georss:box>9.4196343 99.92443040000005 9.604399299999999 100.10275540000005</georss:box>

A Guide to Chiang Mai, Thailand's Capital of Culture: Your Best Option for a Holiday in Asia

      By Joanne Chong

Joanne Chong
Level: Basic PLUS

Joanne Chong is the Business Development Manager at the Empress Hotels Group, a family of Chiang Mai luxury hotels providing the best value for three/four-star ...

With a history of over 700 years, Chiang Mai has long been considered the cultural hub of northern Thailand. Roughly 435 miles from Bangkok, it is a city that combines scenic vistas of the highest mountains in Thailand, arts and crafts centers, and modernity that have been drawing an increasing number of travelers and long-term visitors: as many as five million tourists come to Chiang Mai annually, thanks to its combination of unique culture and accessibility.

The city offers a vast range of attractions, sightseeing options and adventure tours that appeal to any traveler, whether you are traveling with your spouse, your extended family, or your elderly: in Chiang Mai there are various ancient ruins, public parks and botanic gardens that will readily suit the tastes of travelers looking for a quiet spot, while for adventurers and/or families with children the Chiang Mai Zoo and Aquarium-as well as rafting adventures, caving, tiger farms and elephant camps-provide the perfect diversions. For the shopper there are numerous markets such as the Warorot Market and the Night Bazaar that give you a glimpse into Thai culture and lifestyle, as well as an opportunity to buy unusual souvenirs to take home. The famous Walking Streets, available Saturday and Sunday, fulfill much the same function but offer an even wider range of merchandise usually sold directly by artists, sculptors, silversmiths and weavers. Outside the city itself there are various crafting villages and factories from which high-quality, unique goods can be bought.

Another reason to choose Chiang Mai for your destination in Southeast Asia is that it is one of the cheaper cities in Thailand as well as one of the least expensive in the region while not giving up cleanliness and safety. While a trip to an Asian city of a similar price range will require compromise with your accommodation, hygiene and personal security, in Chiang Mai this is not the case: it is possible to stroll about the city late at night, alone, in most areas without having to fear for your life or your valuables.

The tourist hotspots such as the Night Market and Walking Streets have a remarkably low rate of crime (indeed the city as a whole has a vanishingly small rate of violent crime, at about 0.02% in 2009, especially since obtaining firearms in Thailand is difficult for the average citizen) and travelers rarely need to fear pickpockets. Tourist police are moreover stationed throughout the Sunday Walking Street in case of any (unlikely) emergency. Depending on the location of your hotel or guesthouse, most of these markets can be reached on foot; failing that transport costs do not generally exceed 100 baht (roughly 3.50 USD as of April 2011) but are often much cheaper than this figure. Food, drinks, places to stay and nightlife are similarly priced. If you are looking for an economic option for your Thailand holiday that fits a careful budget while retaining comfort and excellent sightseeing, there are few destinations better than Chiang Mai.

Last but not least, the renowned hospitality of Chiang Mai is easily one of its biggest attractions. As you step into your accommodation you will notice beautiful décor in the style of the Lanna Kingdom that transports you back to the Chiang Mai of centuries past, and you will be greeted by friendly staff in the traditional costumes of the same. Authentic Thai cuisine, both of central Thailand and northern Thailand, can be had at every street corner. Service is prompt and friendly across the board, and the locals are generally helpful and don't mind taking a few minutes out of their time to give you directions.

Given these reasons and more, why not consider including Chiang Mai in your list of places to see before you die? A perfect combination of price, culture, and tropical climate: you would be hard-pressed to find a city more welcoming and tourist-friendly!

Joanne Chong works in Business Development as an expert at the Empress Hotels Group, a family of Chiang Mai luxury hotels providing the best value for three/four-star Chiang Mai accommodation suited for Chiang Mai holidays and long-stays, convention facilities and fine dining in the city center.

<georss:box>17.288196199999998 97.70716859999996 20.3047322 99.61294859999995</georss:box>

Four Seasons Bangkok Hotel

      By Vincent Karl W Lee
In 1982, as Bangkok celebrated its bicentennial, the Four Seasons Bangkok Hotel was designed and built. His expertise is wide and varied in a number of topics.

Because of its exotic culture and wonderful sceneries, Thailand has become a magnet destination for tourists who are after a unique and one-of-a-kind holiday. You can choose to have a relaxing getaway in the beaches of Phuket, or immerse in the city life of Bangkok. But if you think you've seen it all, then wait until you get to Petchaburi. This place offers a new and refreshing view of Thailand which you will truly enjoy. And to make the most of it, you should definitely sign up for Petchaburi tours.

For those who don't know, Petchaburi is located just around 150 kilometers south of Bangkok and is considered a central region area. It is also known as the City of the Three Palaces since it used to be a royal fort town. Here, tourists can visit beautiful structures such as the Phrarajnivesmarugadayawan, Phraramrajanivet, and Phranakhonkhiri. After seeing all that, there are more temples, caves, and beaches in the area to explore.

Because historical sightseeing packages are pretty popular in Petchaburi, a lot of culture and history buffs go there. So if you're one of them, this is perfect for you. The great thing about these tours is they usually have land transfer arrangements. You can be picked up from your hotel at Cha-Am or Hua Hin and be brought to Petchaburi in a private air-conditioned vehicle.

One of the places you should visit in Petchaburi is the temple of Wat Maha Dhat. Located near a river, it is said to house some of Buddha's relics. It is believed that this temple is dated as far back as the 12th century and contains paintings that illustrate Buddha's life. In fact, kudos to the Buddhist monks for being able to maintain an important piece of history.

Why don't you also swing by Khao Wang or Palace Hill, the famed summer getaway of King Rama IV? To get there, you have to travel by cable car. On the way, you can see buildings that combine Chinese and Western architectural styles. You can also get a good glimpse of the whole city.

Tours are often not complete without stopping by at the Khao Luang Cave. Here, the main interest is a huge statue of Buddha, towering about 80 feet from the ground and housed in a cavern of limestone. Many of the images, numbering to almost 170, was built by King Mongkut who often used the caves and temples for meditation and studying.

Among the many packages offered by Petchaburi tours is also a food tour of the city's everyday market. You will get to see Thailand's authentic food ingredients, sample sumptuous dishes, and also exotic fruits which you can bring along while wandering the streets of this town.

More than this, there is also a tour for bird lovers since Thailand is a haven for exotic species. It's a great thrill to discover Thailand's exotic birds like the Common Pintail Snipe, Greater Painted Snipe, Red Necked Stint and many more. Usually, they can be seen in their saltwater homes or even along the shores of the Petchaburi area. Thinking about going to amazing Thailand? Make sure to catch one of the Petchaburi tours to complete your trip.

Michel Gerard is an independent travel writer located in Southeast Asia.
